SCHOOL OF TRADITIONAL ARTS AND CRAFTS OF RIBEIRINHA

The Headquarters of The Ethnographic and Folkloric Group of Ribeirinha "recordar e conhecer", runs the Schools of Arts and Traditional Crafts of Ribeirinha, this school have classes that are developed so that the crafts works wont be lost, such as the weaving, tapestries, arraiolos, embroiderings made by hand and machine, musical string instruments, etc. The hands learned with time to construct rare beauty out of small things. The popular art manifested in woollen bedspreads made in the loom, of many colours and geometric shapes, in the handmade embroiderings with white and red raw linen of excellent quality such as the ones what were made in Ribeirinha.

THE BEGINNING OF EMBROIDERY IN TERCEIRA ISLAND

Since inhabiting the island (XV Century), has the Terceiran woman started to idealize embroidery openly and fully (stitches more used during that time) for the clothes of the Portuguese maidens, furthermore, already in the XIX Century, the exporting of embroidery to the USA, Canada, Brazil, England, and Germany was started in an industrialized and regular fashion.
At this time, Terceiran embroidery became noted by it's recelieu and full stitch.

The Terceira workmanship is a manifestation of pureness of the soul of its people. It can be appreciated by works that came of the popular tradition and also by manifestations of new local artists. For its antiquity, for its artistic character, abundance of decorations, polychrome and technique, the weaving was one of the first popular industries of Terceira. The main cloths manufactured in our Island were fiampua and the full web, however what we told were common tasks in the loom. Some rebuke, others weave, others make fringes and others still make remnants of fabric of remaining portions, that later give colourful blankets and carpets, artistic elaborated by these hands of fairies.

The first Class that functioned in this school in 11 of October of 2003 was the class of String Instruments that ended in 5 of May of 2004 with eight pupils with the participation of the Regional Director of Culture.

In the year 2004/2005 we open three classes in 18 of October classes of String Instruments and Embroiderings, in 9 of October the class of Cooking, ending in 2, 3 and 6 of May of 2005, with the presence of the coordinator and the Regional Director.

On the year 2005/2006 we open two classes in 18 of October classes of String Instruments and Embroiderings, in 19 of October, the Class of Embroiderings ended on 18 of May and String Instruments ended on 19 of May 2006, with the presence of the coordinator.

On the year 2006/2007 we open two classes in 18 of October classes of Actualization of Competences Literacy and Embroiderings, in 6 of November, the Class of Embroiderings ended on 18 of May and Competences Literacy ended on 19 of May 2007, with the presence of the coordinator.
